I had my 28 week appt. yesterday and it was such a yucky experience. Let me preface this by explaining that my doctor's office has 5 OB/GYNs and their policy is that you rotate through seeing all of the doctors during your many visits so that you've seen all of them at least once or twice before your baby is delivered. Then, whichever doctor is on call when you go into labor is the one that delivers your baby. I wasn't too thrilled with that, but after calling around to a few other offices in our area, I found that they all did things the same way so I didn't have much choice.
Anyway, back to my appointment. I met with the last of the 5 doctors yesterday and I really disliked the whole meeting. He didn't greet me and introduce himself (as all the other doctors had) and he just kind of looked at my chart and talked to himself. I don't think he even looked me in the face a single time. I was wearing pants with a full belly panel on them and when he went to listen to baby's heartbeat, he just yanked the panel down instead of asking me to roll it down myself...I thought this was quite rude. And then when he used the ultrasound wand he pushed it into my tummy really hard and it hurt! After hearing the heartbeat, he measured my belly but he didn't explain what he was doing so I don't know if I measured big, small or average for being 28 weeks pregnant. I think I heard him mumble that I measured "30" which, after looking on the internet today to see what that means, it would mean that I am measuring as if I was 30 weeks. However, I don't see how that's possible. There were several other women in the waiting room with me and we were all 28 weeks pregnant (I know this because we were all there getting our glucose tests done which is always done at the 28 week mark) and I by far had the smallest belly. Some of these women were huge in comparison so if I measured 30, then they would have to be measuring WAY ahead. So I think something's wrong here.
After that, the appointment was over. He did not even ask me if I had any questions. I think the whole meeting with him lasted all of 2 minutes. I ended up asking one of the nurses my questions and she was super nice and helpful. I really, really, really hope I do not have this guy on call when I have my baby b/c I would be very uncomfortable with that. I would be fine with any of the other 4 doctors, but unfortunately, I think I would just be stuck with this guy if he was the one on call because that's just how they do things. If anyone has any suggestions on how I can handle this situation, please let me know.

Heather, my practice works the same way and there is one of the OB's that I did not like AT ALL. He treated me the same way that you described and he was very arrogant. He was on call when I went into labor with Hannah. Fortunately, my labor was so long that he wasn't there to deliver. I ended up having an emergency c-section after 26 hours of labor, but that is another story! Honestly, you do not see the doctors very much at all during labor. The nurses do so much of the work. The doctor came in to check me every couple hours and to break my water and then to take me to the OR for the c-section.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if there is anything you can do about your situation because of the way the practice is set up. Hopefully he will not be on call when you go into labor. What you really need to have are good nurses because they will be the ones spending so much time with you. GOOD LUCK and let me know if you come up with a solution!

They measure your belly and base the growth off your previous appointments measurement, so if that was your first time being measured, there's no way he could say that you are at 30 weeks...plus, it's all completely open to each doctor's opinion.
ReplyDeleteAs far as having him on call, it sucks, but if you go naturally, you don't have a ton of opinions. If, for some reason, they decide to induce you, talk to a doctor you do like and ask them who is on call that day. If it's him, then ask to switch to a different day. The doctor may ask you why and then you can tell them, but I wouldn't start out with "I don't like Dr. Smith and I don't want him to deliver me." Lauren's right, though, you don't see the doctor much during labor, so hopefully it won't be a problem! :)
